Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island represents some of the most upscale accommodations in the Charleston area. Lodging is located behind two sets of gates, where you can find many golf courses, restaurants, tennis, and water parks. The area is almost completely residential, and offers a peaceful retreat from the daily grind. The large beaches and miles upon miles of flat bike paths lend themselves to hours of exploration by bicycle, where it is not uncommon to encounter the diminutive local deer population, as well as the occasional alligator. For the day tripper, access to Kiawah is granted at Beachwalker Park. Beachwalker has somewhat limited parking, so it is necessary to come early during peak times, but the small parking facility combined with expansive beach make this the least crowded beach experience in the area. It is worth it to take the short stroll to the east end of the park to look for dolphins feeding- an amazing site to see. Nearby Freshfield Village offers up an upscale Harris Teeter grocery store as well as many dining and shopping options.

Seabrook Island

Right next door is Seabrook Island. Another gated and largely residential area, the community does feature equestrian diversions, as well as golf, tennis, and a beach club with community pool and some dining options. Nearby Bohicket Marina offers an expanded menu of dining options, and Freshfield Village further expands dining and shopping choices. Many visitors to Seabrook tour the island by bicycle, and paths connect Seabrook, Bohicket Marina, Freshfields, and Kiawah.

Isle of Palms

Isle of Palms is the northernmost beach area in the Charleston area. Service to the island was originally by ferry only but a connector bridge allowing direct access was completed in 1929. There are a host of dining options including the ever popular Coconut Joes and Acme Two Country Kitchen. The island features a gated resort community- Wild Dunes Resort, where golf, tennis, shopping and dining are all conveniently located. “IOP,” as the locals call it, also enjoys close proximity to the many shopping and dining options on nearby Mount Pleasant.
